Character Dance is the theatrical version of dances derived from the national dances of regions or countries in Europe and became part of the structure of classical ballets in the late 19th century. Musical themes inspired by these national dances were incorporated into the musical scores of classical ballets by the mid nineteenth century and inspired the development of "Character Dance" technique that is still taught today in professional ballet company schools world-wide. Character dances are featured in classical ballets performed by major ballet companies. Examples are: "Nutcracker Ballet's" Spanish, & Russian variations; "Coppelia's" Czardas,& Mazurka dances, and "Swan Lake's" Tarantella and Hungarian Dance ". Character dance class has its own technique, passed down from generations of dancers. The class is comprised of a character dance warm up & floor exercises and dances! Dancers will learn new rhythms, step techniques, and ways to shape their body line into the style of the character dance being learned.
